These fun little tiny fruits deliver a taste of watermelon with a hint of lime alas the name Mexican Sour Gherkin or Cucamelons. These tiny melons are such a fun treat in the garden. They look like a miniature watermelon. Having trailing vines that make these dainty looking foliage that gives their exotic look. With its fine delicate looking leaves its vines can grow up to 10 ft.
Using a hanging basket they are quite beautiful or up a trellis. Pick fruit when it gets the size of your thumb 1-2 inches.
This succulent treat is used fresh out of the garden, canned, in salads, or popped right in your mouth. Kids absolutely love them. Mexican Sour Gherkin is more resistant to pests and tolerant to drought and mild cold (but not frost).
In warmer climates you can treat Cucamelon as a perennial. Cucamelons are easy to grow and are fast growers. They are very prolific and are ripe when they either come of the vine easily or fall to the ground.
Sow 3-4 seeds 1/2" deep in compost. They like warmth so if sowing indoors keep on a heat mat or warm room. Tolerate drought well and avoid over watering.
